It’s the one day of the year that mothers get spoilt, with breakfast in bed, surprise presents and a slap-up meal.

And as it’s always better to plan ahead, it’s vital to double check that all-important date.

Mother’s Day is a modern celebration originating in North America, honoring one’s own mother, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in the months of March or May.

The date of Mother’s Day changes every year. This year Mother’s Day will be Sunday March 15.

Pruning Vines and creating a Garden Sculpture

The 14th of February is the day to Prune your  Vines in your Garden.

As a florist I’ve never been able to prune my Vines on the 14th of February as this is a day I’m always working in our flowershops creating lots of Valentine’s Bouquets.

However as my garden is one my biggest hobbys I look forward to a nice winter’s day as soon as I’ve had my rest after Valentines in the shops year after year, to prune my vines and spend time with my dogs in the garden.

Every year this feels like the real start of spring for me with days getting longer, the sun is getting warmer and the garden exploding with lots of snowdrops.

February is for me the real start of the gardening season with snowdrops popping up everywhere and the days getting longer.
February is for me the real start of the gardening season with snowdrops popping up everywhere and the days getting longer.

In order to get the best yield from your grape vines you need to prune very rigourisly every winter, and I’ve often heared expert mentioning the 14th of February as the perfect day to do this.

Even though the fruit isn’t the main reason I’m growing vines in the garden, I keep to this pruning regime every year. As we do not get enough sun to ripen all our grapes to sull size every year, some varieties work better than others in our Irish climate. For me it is mostly about the beautifull foliage and later on the autumn colours.

Bu July of each year the vines grow into beautiful rich green climbers.

Back to the pruning.

The best way to prune a vine is to leave 3 to 4 stems grow, right from the base of the plant, up to a lenght of 3 to 4 meter and take away all side-branches to approx 4cm (2/3 inch) length. It is from here that the neew branches grow and the fruit is produced. Also by leaving the same few stems every year you create beautifull strong stems that look stunning in winter.

Pruning all side branches from your vines right back to close to the main stem.

The Clean up after the pruning becomes the real fun for today.

After all the pruning you are left with lots of branches to clean up. Rather than having to pick it all up and filling up the composter in the garden, or even worse, if you haven’t got a composting site in your garden, having to pay to dispose of the pruned branches, why not turn this into your own garden sculpture.

Simply push the branches together and start rolling the bundle of twigs around your garden untill it becomes a big loos sphere of twigs.

Creating a gardfen object from your prunes vine twigs.

At this point I use a roll of florist wire, natural twine is also very good – but try choosing something that naturally de composes over time – and again keep rolling your shere around the garden white wrapping your wire around it.

Using florist bind wire

Stronger ends of the branches can be carefully bend inside the centre of your sphere – be carefull not to break these as they are less flexible in the winter – and with your wire or twine you can keep going until you have the desired shape white pushing the complete object into shape while rolling it around your garden.

Creating a garden sculpture from your vine branches.

And there you have it. A Garden job where the clean up is the most fun of it all.

This stunning garden object will last for several years outside and can be used as a decorative object on your garden table, a base for climbing plants in your border or when dried you could ever make this into your own home made centrepiece light over the dining table.

I hope you enjoyed this blog and get as much fun from your garden as I do time after time.

The Tulip – From Turkish turban to Amsterdam canal house

Oh, the tulip! It can’t get any more Dutch, you might be thinking, but the tulip originates from Iran, Afghanistan and Kazakhstan. Nomads took the flower to Turkey, where sultans wore a tulip on their turbans. That is how the tulip got its name: ‘tulipan’ means turban.

Tulips make you happy.
Tulips make you happy.

The popular tulip is available in white, red, yellow, pink, purple, orange, green or with petals in different colours. You also get a lot of choice of shapes. There are tulips with a single or a double row of flower petals, striking frilly and parrot tulips with serrated- edged petals and the elegant lily tulip.

  • With these care tips you can enjoy your little turbans for 5 to 12 days:
  • Choose a vase which is tall enough: tulips can still grow a few centimetres.
  • Place the tulips first of all for an hour in the vase, in their wrapping. The tulips will suck up the water and will straighten themselves.
  • Use tap water at room temperature.
  • Cut the stems diagonally off at the bottom.
  • Place the vase in a cool, not too sunny position, away from the fruit bowl.
Beautifull spring blooms - Tulips
Beautifull spring blooms – Tulips

When you give flowers, in some cases you also send a message. Red tulips mean turbulent love, yellow tulips mean rejection and black tulips: ‘I love you so much I would give everything up for you’. If you gave a tulip in the sixteenth century, then you would be giving riches. In that time the flower was extremely popular and a speculative trade in tulip bulbs quickly developed. In those days you could buy a whole canal house in Amsterdam for the price of one tulip bulb! Those times are over, but you will still feel rich, with a beautiful bunch of tulips in your home.

Sunflowers the Queen of Summer Flowers

If you could choose one flower to crown as queen of the summer flowers, it would have to be the majestic sunflower. Did you know that the flower in the wild turns with the sun during the day? At night the flower heads turn back to the east. We call this phenomenon Heliotropism.

As well as the well-known yellow sunflower, you can also choose orange, brown, cream coloured and dark red varieties. There is also a range of shapes: there are sunflowers with large or small flowers, with a single row of flower petals or with multiple rings of petals.

The sunflower is often considered a symbol of the sun and love. In Greek mythology, nymph Clytia fell completely in love with the sun god Apollo. Even though Clytia was really beautiful, Apollo didn’t return her love. The result: Clytia died from a broken heart, changed into a sunflower and turned constantly with the sun, to see her sun god. What a dramatic love story!

The sunflower actually comes from North and South America. Native Americans ate the seeds from the flower, together with beans, corn and squashes. The official name of the sunflower is Helianthus, a combination of the Greek Helios (sun) and Anthos (flower).

When arranging a sunflower bouquet, think of a combination of calla lilies, gladioli, dahlia and celosia.

Also lovely to combine with sunflowers and which can be seen on the photo are gladioli, alstroemerias, celosias and asclepias. With a piece of floral foam as the base, you build the bouquet from the top to the bottom, first the gladioli, then the alstroemerias, then the sunflowers and celosias and finally the asclepias.

Create an extended summer in your vase:

  • Cut the end of the stems off diagonally.
  • Remove any excess leaves from the stems.
  • Place the flowers in a clean, preferably glass vase.
  • Add a bit of cut flower food.
  • Re-fill the vase regularly, because sunflowers are thirsty.

At Lamber de Bie Flowers we sell Sunflowers at 3 for €7.50  These magnificent large Sunflowers will brighten your Patio table for alfresco dining or your kitchen on the duller summer days.
